About Jennifer Smith
A BIT OF MY STORY
When my kids were young, I was a struggling single mom trying to make ends meet. I was working 50 hours a week at an office job that I hated. I barely had enough money to pay my rent let alone my bills. But as a parent, I had to do what I had to do for my kids. It took every ounce of energy I had to get through the day. After work, I would pick up the kids, run errands, get home, feed the kids, spend some time playing with them, bathe them and get them off to bed. I was broke and exhausted and I knew there had to be a better way, so I started paying attention to people who had the kind of life I wanted to live.
After some careful thought, I decided starting a business was my answer. I started teaching myself graphic design at night after the kids would go to bed and it wasn’t long after I got my first client, that realized I could only teach myself so much and that I needed to go back to school so that I could better serve my clients. So there I was. A single mom of two young children, working 50 hours a week just to try to make ends meet. I was trying to keep my new clients happy and get my business going, and now I was also a full-time student as well.
And then it happened, I got laid off from my job. I went from having a reliable paycheck to completely having to rely on myself to bring in enough business to survive. It was a tough time in life, but my determination and drive to succeed for my kids gave me the motivation to push on, and eventually my hard work paid off. I went from working from home at my desk in the corner of our living room, to having a beautiful office with employees and more business then I could keep up with.
Even though my intentions were good and my heart was in the right place, I ended up getting way off track. I think this is true for a lot of people. We get caught up in trying so hard to be successful in our careers, or we are so focused on obtaining money or the “things” that we want, that sometimes we lose sight of what is truly important.
I was so preoccupied and distracted with my responsibilities in my business and trying to being successful, that I lost sight of what was really important and why I had started in the first place: my family.
Fast forward eight years; I was burned out. I knew I needed to change but I wasn’t sure what that meant. My business was successful and financially we were doing great, but I was more depressed than I had ever been. I felt like a failure when it came to my family because other people’s demands consumed my energy, and because of my lack of boundaries, my kids were the ones that paid the price.
It’s funny how life works sometimes. When we don’t listen to our inner voice, it seems to throw you a curveball so big that you have no choice but to stop and listen and that is exactly what happened. I was in a debilitating accident that left me no choice but to give up everything I had worked so hard for. I went from being independent, hard-working and in control, to literally having to surrender to having no control over anything that was happening in my life.
I started thinking about how unhappy I had been for so long despite my financial success. I realized that there had been signs for a really long time that something needed to change but I had chosen to ignore them. It took something as big as literally breaking my body for me to stop and listen to what my heart was telling me all along. It was after this realization that I vowed to make a change. No longer would I put success before my family. And once again I decided to shift my life completely.
My life is so different now than it was back then and for that I am thankful. When you let go of how things are supposed to work out, the expectations of other people, start to love yourself more, and start following your passions, beautiful things happen. Just like so many other times of my life, when I decided to just trust, everything had a way of magically working itself out better than I could have ever Imagined.
